Back to School Perils

The first day of school! Into the backpack goes scissors- folders- paper towels- wipes- markers- pencils- crayons- rulers- 5 marble cover composition books - erasers- tissues- and more. Off those little kids go.. looking like giant tortoises crawling under the weight of their enormous shells. I just wait for one of them to tip. - Oh it'll happen! - and their feet will be stuck up in the air- and they will be unable to right themselves. (And it will be amusing.. as a Mom- who will now go get a super venti non fat latte and enjoy the quiet until 2:45 pm.....Aaaahhhhhhhhhh.)

I sketched this in prismacolor pencil- I like to do that more and more - because it is unforgiving. It forces me to loosen up- knowing there is no erasing and fixing going to happen. As an artist with crazy perfectionist issues- it's good therapy.

The saddles are an homage to Lucy Van Pelt - my personal fashion icon.;)

  1. Awesome! Loving this! That is pretty much exactly like my 6 year old looks in her extremely large backpack!! Great movement!

I don't know if I'm brave enough to work directly in prismacolor. I admire your intrepid nature!!

  3. Love the sketch, Kelly, as always! It is so true and it's a wonder the poor kids don't have back problems. Prisma color is fun to work with and you're right about it being unforgiving. That's a great exercise for loosening up for sure.

  5. Adorable! I like the limited color palette, it gives the sketch more punch. I also love your little details, which bring even more life to your character, down to the leaves.

  7. I agree-very brave to sketch w/ Prismacolors. :) This sketch looks like you captured the girl on film. A moment in time that I'm sure wishes hadn't happened.

  8. Awww, poor kid! You did a great job in capturing her expression. I feel like there should be a trapped bug or dog under her backpack :)
