Mother's Day/Dance Like a Chicken Day
Hello! Hello!
It's been quite a while since I've posted here to the blog, but this week I had a sketch that was already completed and fit the theme perfectly! Hooray for little miracles. ;)
This is a double page spread sketch that was assigned to everyone who attended SCBWI Houston's conference this April. Visiting art director Lucy Cummins gave us the choice of two prompts, and we submitted sketches, received revision notes, then brought the images to full color where Lucy critiqued the pieces in an open group. It was a lot of fun, and a great experience.
If you can't tell, this sketch is for the picture book CHICKS GONE WILD, illustrated by the fantastically talented Ward Jenkins. Lucy advised not to look up the book when she gave the assignment, but I was already familiar with it, and Ward's style. I had to distance myself from the book as much as possible. Fortunately, I had no problem doing that. I focused on keeping the home "country" and giving everything a Texas flair. It was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed working with this groovin' momma and her little flock.
