Priscilla~ back to school treats

With Summer days winding down ~ calendar-wise, perhaps more than weather~wise, it's back-to-school thoughts on our minds!
This little girl loves, loves, loves bugs and especially grasshoppers, but didn't expect to see one her first day back to school!

  1. This is adorable- the BEST par of the sketch for me is in the girl's face- the cheek line. One line can make a great drawing of a face or wreck it. This line is perfect! Creating the softness of a little girl's face- as she accepts this gift of a creepy bug. -ewww- I was not like her.

  3. It has been years since I did this. Sketching used to be something I did for assignments for magazine illustrations. Most of them would go to the senior editors who would pick and choose or offer suggestions and send them back. I would go over them and choose the idea that I liked the best and then make a final drawing in black and white (usually a fine red sable brush was my took of choice as it could go super fine to wide in one stroke). Anway, I was about to go "modern" and asked my friend, Norman Rockwell, by card, if he thought I should do that and he sent a card back saying that all people can recognize realistic things and hardly anybody could recognize modern art and for that reason it was seldom used in magazine illustration.

I really enjoyed having a look at your blog.

  4. Such a fun scene and sketch, Priscilla! I love the little girls expression too. It story makes me wonder if the boy knew she liked bugs or thought he could try and scare her.

  5. Oh my goodness, what an adorable little girl!! She's great! She reminds me of my youngest daughter who adores bugs. In fact, she is wicked proud of her bug bracelets - spiney spiders, scorpions, scarab beetles and such encased in plexaglass. :) Lovely illustration Priscilla!

  6. Enjoying and appreciating your comments so much! thank you all for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences! such fun!

I thought perhaps the boy might just be a bit shy, but knows it would delight his friend to show her his find - fun shared at the lunch tables!
